Jigsaw Reading

1. Movie Quiz (Ice-Breaking with Word Art)
: Read the keywords quickly and guess the movie title.

2. Share Your Ideas with Guessing
: Look at the three pictures carefully and guess the answers for the questions.
- What country do they from?
- Why do you think so?
- What are they doing?

3. Jigsaw Reading
: Read their own text in an expert group and report to the home group
: Record the information on the graphic organizer

4. Share Your Ideas with Voting
: Talk about which movie Ss will watch next class and vote one.

Reading class(Guessing game, Station Activity, Ticket to the door)

1. Introduction : Guessing Game
- Giving 5 clues related to a topic. Show one by one.
- If ss get a right answer with less clues, they can get more point.

Activity 1: 2 Acronyms & 1 Antonym
(Originated from True and False Definition @UQ)

- Distribute worksheet with target word in pairs.



- Ask each pair to find 2 synonyms and 1 antonym at thesaurus.com.
- Take turns in pairs to ask other groups to guess the antonym.


Activity 2: Class Feud
(Inspired by Family Feud from Noel's class)

- Make students in 2 groups.
- Each group takes turns and guess Top 7 most common teenage problems.
- If a team gets the 1st correct, the team gets 7 score. 2nd, 6pts. 3rd, 5pts. .... 7th. 1pt. 
- With those items, students can involve in writing activity.

Mannequin Quiz is useful for reviewing and motivating.
Procedures are below.

 How to do ‘Mannequin Quiz’
1. A volunteer comes to the front.
2. The volunteer will see a picture on the phone, and freeze like a mannequin.
3. Guess what the mannequin is doing. “He/She is ____________ing.”
4. Everybody asks a question; “What are you doing?.”
5. Mannequin answers; “I’m ______________.”

Teaching Demo: Symbols Around the World

Pace reading + Group teaching


[Pace reading]


1. Let the students listen to the recording of the text using the software first.
2. Let the students read the text out loudly at the same pace of the recording.
3. Slowly turn down the volume of the recording and stop. Make the students guess where we stop.
4. It's a pair work. Let the students disscuss together with their partner.

Pace reading is a very easy way to make Ss focus on the text.

[Group Teaching]

1. Divide the text into four parts and write down the things the Ss should cover.
2. Make four students into one group.
3.  Assign each students their part.
4.  The Ss take turn and teach each other.
5. After all the students have their turns, check their comprehension with Quizziz.



Vocabulary Spinner

1. Give a set of cards and a spinner to each group.
2. Students flick the arrow in the middle of the spinner and flip one card over.
3. Students have to do or say as the arrow indicates.




Review the last semester

  1. There are two sets of cards: categories & words
  2. Put the category set on the table (face down)
  3. Make groups of 4
  4. Each student has 7 word cards
  5. Put the rest of word cards on the table facing down
  6. Students flip one category card at a time and make a sentence with the word on their cards in turn
  7. If s/he makes a proper sentence with their card, they can put their card on the word card set on the table
  8. If s/he can’t make a proper sentence with his/her card, s/he should pick up one card from the table and pass the turn
  9. The person who abandons his/her word cards will be the winner

Language Through Film


This class is "Language through Film". Students watch this movie for 10 minutes and then dictate while listening. The final step is a game activity which is called "board game". It is a group work and students need dice, question cards and board game.

Mr. Browne’s usage of precepts inspired me to try something like this in my undergraduate composition classes.

  This Google Document contains a list of all saying and short descriptions of related lesson activities. Please add other wise sayings and ideas about how to use them in our teaching.
